The History of Lund

Lund is one of Sweden's oldest towns. It was founded in 990 and is an old archbishop's throne and it was even the seat of the king for a short time! One could definitely say that Lund has been an important city throughout Swedish and Nordic history. The city centre of Lund was formed in 1020 and is therefore one of the oldest townships in the country. A stroll around town a warm summer's night is something the pHøs recommends.

In modern times, Lund have become one of Sweden’s most lovable towns for students. No less than 40 000 of Lunds 90 000 inhabitants are university students. In Lund, the possibilities of what to do opens up like a classic Swedish smørgåsbord. If the Nolla wants to be cultural they can visit Domkyrkan, the large cathedral in Lundagård, the Observatory or the beautiful University building. If the Nolla prefers to explore the nightlife of Lund, they should try one of the towns 13 Nations.

Student spirit

Given its long history as a beloved student town, it is quite natural that the town of Lund in many ways is defined by student culture. Every fourth year all the students in Lund come together and invites the rest of Sweden to the magnificent spectacle that is Lundakarnevalen, the recurring event Studentafton hosts lecturers and debaters in world class, and at first of May, all of Sweden listens to the sweet voices of Studentsångarna choir, when they sing to welcome the spring.

The student life in Lund has a lot to offer, and if the Nolla feels eager to fully experience the student spirit the best way to get the full experience is to join one of Lund's many associations. Join a Spex, play in an orchestra, sing in a choir, join a Nation, and most of all: work as a volunteer at the K-guild!

The Nations

The Nations in Lund account for a significant part of the student life in Lund. Apart from offering accommodation, they also host night clubs, pubs, lunches, dinners, trips, spex, sports tournaments and so on. Lund has 13 Nations. From the beginning they were associations for people from the same home region, and are therefore named after towns and regions in Sweden. Today, everyone is free to join whichever Nation you prefer. All Nations except from Smålands Nation are a part of Studentlund, and a membership in one of these Nations is mandatory in order to get to attend the Nation activities. As a member in a Nation, you are also allowed to attend the the activities and events or other Nations. Scroll through the Naitions below and click the images to get to their websites.

SPEX

Spex is a form of student theater and an old tradition in both Sweden and Finland. In Lund, the first original Spex, Gerda, was performed in 1886 by the ensemble today known as Lundaspexarna.

There are many spex groups you can join in Lund. Some of the biggest are Lundaspexarna, Var Gladspexarna, Jesperspexarna, Boelspexarna, Spegatspexarna and Toddyspexarna. As part of a Spex you get to meet a lot of new people, hang out, party, be creative and express yourself on or of the stage!

OTHER FUN THINGS

There are also many other fun things to do in Lund. This includes associations such as QUB, TIF, LESS and Lundapyrot. In addition, there is also a language café at the Language and Literature Centre, orchestras and dance associations. The largest orchestras in Lund are Bleckhornen and Altekameren.
